Greater Manchester Research for the Future Programme

Research for the Future is a NHS/NIHR supported programme that helps and motivates patients to participate in research. The service promotes research opportunities across all health conditions, but has a particular interest in supporting research into long Covid.

Register Now

The Research for the Future programme is running a campaign to encourage people to participate in research.  Joining Research for the Future means patients will receive information about opportunities to take part in research, helping the NHS prevent and treat a range of long term health conditions including long Covid, diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. This is a fully funded initiative at no cost to your practice.

Everyone over the age of 18 & living in England can join Research for the Future

To enrol your practice for the fully-funded programme, click the Register Now button.

I am delighted that, locally, we have a world leading team, led by Prof. Nawar Bakerly, aiming to improve the management of people with long COVID. They need your support.  Already over 8,000 patients are signed up to their research database, which is already supporting many clinical trials.  If they could treble that number, it will vastly improve their ability to complete much needed research.  They will be sending out texts to patients asking them to join the register, and with your support, I am sure they will attract many more patients. It would be wonderful if your practice can sign up to supporting their project

Patient Engagement

Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire Strategic Clinical Networks (GMEC SCNs) are working with iPLATO to invite patients to take part in the programme. We request your agreement to share minimal patient data for the purpose of inviting your patients to register with Research for the Future.

If you agree, iPLATO will send an SMS text message to patients registered at your practice who are 18+ years. This will be a short, GP-endorsed, SMS text message from “NHS-NoReply” inviting the patient to join the Research for the Future programme via a link.

All data will be stored and managed securely and to the highest professional standards, in compliance with data protection laws.

Professor Nawar Bakerly, Clinical Lead for Tier 4 Long COVID services, Greater  Manchester

“People who get involved in health research tend to have better health outcomes, as they become better at managing their own health. Joining the research community is good for you and good for others.”

  1. iPLATO will provide practices with an EMIS or TPP standard operating procedure document (according to the clinical system in use at the practice), to assist in conducting a clinical system search.
  2. All data is processed within the HSCN network and the search report generated will need to be shared to the secure and encrypted iPLATO NHS mail inbox via iplato@nhs.net
  3.  iPLATO will ensure that only patients who have consented to receive an SMS as identified by practices, will be contacted.
  4. iPLATO Healthcare acts as a data processor for this service.
